The Author

Felix Wong is a former California resident with a life-long passion for travel and adventure. During his years as an undergraduate at Stanford University, and later as a mechanical engineer in the semiconductor industry, he engaged in numerous ultra-distance journeys by bicycle or sports car. In recent years his interests have also diversified to rock climbing, mountaineering, ultramarathon running, triathlon, and “places off the beaten path that require a high degree of mental determination and/or good use of one’s appendages.”

At age 30 in 2005, he escaped the rat race of Silicon Valley and defected to the dream town and outdoors mecca of Fort Collins, Colorado. After years of planning, hard work, frugality, and investing, he now considers himself semi-retired, occasionally doing freelance writing, web development and mechanical design. His passions remain and the adventures continue. “Only those who dare, truly live” is one of his favorite quotes, attributable to Ruth P. Freedman.

Here’s an article about the hike my friend Tori and I did at Coyote Ridge a few months back. It came out in Fort Collins Now on Friday, August 1, 2008 and is entitled, “A Doggone Good Hike.” You can download it here (PDF, 597 kB) or view it online.

In Search of the Great Sandwich

When I was out riding the Tour Divide, my article about doing a motorcycle ride through the Poudre Canyon came out in Fort Collins Now (Wednesday, June 18, 2008). You can download the article (PDF, 606 KB) or view it online on FCN’s website.

It reminds me about how I was thinking during the Tour Divide that the next time I decide to do a cross-country trip somewhere in the world, I think I’ll do it on a vehicle that has more than the measly 1/3 horsepower that my legs can provide.

I hadn’t posted a full report on April’s Boston Marathon because I was writing one up for Fort Collins Now as part of my (roughly) bi-monthly outdoors column. The article, “Beantown’s Promise,” was just published last Wednesday (May 28, 2008). You can download it here (PDF, 603 KB) or view it online on FCN’s website.

Speaking of backlogs, my next FCN article will be about motorcycling through the Poudre Canyon. I’m working on that article right now.

Family Stuff

One of the more interesting things about coming out to southeastern Canada this month was getting to see significant locations of my father’s youth. My dad, you see, immigrated to Canada when he was 13 and grew up in Montréal. So when I was there, I visited the schools he attended along with the location where my Great Grandfather had a laundry shop. Photos of all this are below.

Then, in the Toronto, Ontario, I had dinner with relatives on my mom’s side of the family that I haven’t seen in almost 23 years (when I was 9 or 10.) Above is a photo from that get together. It was great to see them all after all this time. Continue reading »

I’m Not Home, But…

May 22nd, 2008 (Thu) - Home Life

As of this moment, I am in the Toronto, Ontario area in Canada at a cousin’s place and plopped in front of a 60″ TV.

The last three CNN headlines:

  • John McCain was in Stockton, CA (where I grew up) rejecting some conservative pastor’s comments.
  • A huge tornado touched down in Windsor, CO prompting a state of emergency. Man, that is only 15-20 miles southeast of where I live in Fort Collins! Hope the damage in Windsor wasn’t too bad and that not many people were hurt (I heard at least one person died. :( )
  • Wildfires in the Santa Cruz mountains, where I used to spend a lot of time many years ago. Hope my friends living up there are okay.

Funny how no matter how far from home I go, home always seems to come back to me.
